MEET THE TEAM
Dr. Mendelsohn grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She completed her undergraduate studies at Virginia Tech (Go Hokies!) and attended Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, where she earned her M.D. She moved to Charlotte, NC to complete her residency in Family Medicine. Upon residency completion, she became Board Certified in Family Medicine and practiced full-time in Charlotte until 2014.
While practicing in Charlotte, Dr. Mendelsohn was very involved in physician leadership, both as medical director of her practice and throughout the hospital system, serving on various committees. She graduated from the McColl School of Business Physician Leadership Institute in 2012 with 30 of her physician colleagues. Also in 2012, she was voted by her peers as one of Charlotte’s “Top Doctors” in the May edition of Charlotte Magazine. . .continue reading
Kelsey Riggs, like Dr. Mendelsohn, grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She completed her undergraduate studies at Virginia Tech (GO HOKIES!) and then moved to Raleigh for a postgraduate leadership development program. During that year, while working at Alliance Medical Ministry as the garden and wellness coordinator, Kelsey realized she had a passion for taking care of more than just plants and decided she would need to go back to school to enter the medical profession. Kelsey took night classes to become an EMT-B and was sold from there!
Kelsey's eagerness for wellness was paired well with her Master's of Science in Public Health and she grew in knowledge of how to assess health from a community level. Kelsey then went straight into the Physician Assistant training and essentially lost touch with the world as she dove headfirst into medicine. She now has re-entered society as a PA-C and is beyond excited to begin practicing medicine at a clinic similar to where she gained experience for PA school as a medical assistant.
Kelsey's passions within medicine include preventative/upstream medicine, patient education, patient advocacy, and a whole-body (mind, body, spirit) approach to family medicine. Kelsey believes that being an individual's medical provider is a huge responsibility and privilege and hopes that as she begins providing care for this community that becomes evident.

"Dr. Mendelsohn and Helen at New South Family Medicine are amazing. The level of patient care is unmatched and I am thrilled with the expertise, attention, diligence, and communication received. You won’t find this level of care anywhere else."
