Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy
Feel Like Yourself Again.
Aging shouldn’t mean feeling tired, foggy, or “not quite yourself.”
At New South Family Medicine, we understand how hormone changes can affect your energy, mood, focus, and overall well-being. That’s why we offer Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) — a natural, personalized approach to restoring balance so you can feel like you again.
Because we practice Direct Primary Care, your hormone therapy isn’t an isolated service — it’s part of your ongoing relationship with your provider.
We look at the whole picture: nutrition, stress, thyroid function, sleep, and lifestyle. Your BHRT plan becomes one piece of a larger strategy to help you feel vibrant, healthy, and strong from the inside out.
You’ll always have the support of a provider who knows you personally and is just a text or call away.
BHRT and You
Bioidentical hormones are plant-derived compounds that have the exact same molecular structure as the hormones your body naturally produces.
Unlike synthetic alternatives, these hormones are biologically identical — which means your body recognizes and processes them just like its own.
At New South Family Medicine, we use BHRT to gently restore balance in estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels, helping you regain energy, mental clarity, and emotional stability — all while supporting long-term wellness.
Hormone changes can sneak up on us — sometimes starting in your 30s or 40s, sometimes later. Men and women alike can experience symptoms of imbalance, such as:
Fatigue or low energy
Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
Weight changes or bloating
Mood swings, anxiety, or irritability
Low libido or sexual discomfort
Hot flashes or night sweats
Trouble sleeping
Decreased muscle tone or strength
If any of these sound familiar, it’s not “just aging.” It could be your hormones — and there’s a natural way to bring them back into harmony.

Since 2002, Dr. David Mendelsohn has been practicing as a Family Medicine physician, with a focus on preventative medicine and managing common disease states such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, depression/anxiety and musculoskeletal injuries. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Rochester, where he double majored in Biology and Psychology and minored in Ancient Civilizations. Dr. Mendelsohn then went on to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School Medicine.
After finishing his training, he joined a practice with Novant Health in Charlotte's Steele Creek area. Although he appreciated the leadership experience, Dr. Dave realized the difficulties of providing or receiving medical care within a large system. He wished he had more time to spend with patients in the office and through email or phone calls. Dr. Dave believes that the patient/doctor relationship is a team relationship and wants to ensure that his "teammates" are well-informed about their bodies and illnesses.
In his free time, he enjoys being with his family, including his wife Dr. Jessica Mendelsohn, who is also his boss, and their two sons. He also likes to watch and support the Tar Heels and Panthers, or go fishing on the lake.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is a natural approach to restoring hormonal balance using compounds that are chemically identical to the hormones your body naturally produces. Unlike synthetic hormones, bioidentical hormones — such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone — mimic your body’s molecular structure, making them more compatible and potentially better tolerated.
This personalized approach helps relieve symptoms in women during perimenopause and menopause, as well as men during andropause (a drop in testosterone). Replacing these hormones can lead to such benefits as restoring vitality, energy, muscle mass, sleep, and emotional well-being.
-
Traditional HRT often uses synthetic or animal-derived hormones, which are similar but not identical to human hormones. In contrast, BHRT uses plant-derived hormones (commonly from soy or yams) that match the body’s own hormones on a molecular level.
Because of this, BHRT may offer:
Fewer side effects in some patients
More precise dosing and delivery options
A personalized balance of multiple hormones, not a one-size-fits-all treatment
At New South Family Medicine & MedSpa, we use lab testing to ensure every patient receives the right combination of hormones for their unique needs
-
BHRT is ideal for men and women experiencing hormonal imbalance due to aging, menopause, perimenopause, or other health conditions. You may be a good candidate if you experience symptoms such as:
Fatigue or low energy
Hot flashes or night sweats
Low libido or sexual dysfunction
Mood swings or anxiety
Difficulty sleeping or brain fog
Weight gain or loss of muscle mass
A consultation at New South Family Medicine & MedSpa includes a detailed medical history, lab testing, and discussion of your symptoms to determine whether BHRT is right for you.
-
Patients who undergo BHRT often report noticeable improvements in quality of life. Benefits can include:
Reduced hot flashes and night sweats
Improved mood, focus, and memory
Better sleep quality
Increased energy and stamina
Enhanced libido and sexual performance
Support for bone and heart health
Improved metabolism and body composition
For many, BHRT helps restore a sense of vitality and balance that was lost due to hormonal decline.
-
While there are potential side effects and risks to BHRT, it will be important to meet with your provider to discuss the specifics of each side effects and risk and they could impact each individual.
At New South Family Medicine & MedSpa, all BHRT treatments are closely monitored with lab work and follow-up visits to ensure hormone levels remain balanced and safe. Our providers use evidence-based protocols and only prescribe doses necessary to achieve optimal wellness.
-
At New South, the BHRT program is an out-of-pocket cost. You can file with insurance, but historically, insurance has not been good about covering BHRT costs.
We don’t take insurance as a form of payment, which actually allows us to offer you services at a lower cost. In addition to the low costs, you’ll have access to a team of providers who take their time during your appointment instead of rushing you out the door, making sure you feel confident and cared for. You’re not just paying for the labs and treatment–you’re also getting a dedicated medical team ready to guide you through the process.
The cost breakdown is:
Initial visit (90 minutes): $250.00
Lab visits: $75.00
Follow up visits (45 minutes): $125.00
-
Most patients begin noticing improvements within 2 to 6 weeks, though full benefits may take up to three months as your body adjusts to balanced hormone levels. Symptoms such as sleep disturbances, mood changes, and hot flashes typically improve first, while energy, metabolism, and sexual function may take longer.
Regular follow-ups at New South Family Medicine & MedSpa ensure your hormone levels remain optimized and your results continue to improve over time.
-
We offer estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone for both men and women. We have several bioidentical hormone options to suit your lifestyle and medical needs:
Topical creams or gels
Oral capsules or troches
Injections
Patches
During your consultation, your provider will help determine which delivery method best fits your goals and preferences.
-
Yes — BHRT can benefit both men and women. Women often begin therapy in perimenopause or menopause and even post-menopause (typically between ages 40–60), while men may start when testosterone levels decline — sometimes as early as their 30s or 40s.
The key to safety is proper medical supervision and testing. At New South Family Medicine & MedSpa, we monitor your hormone levels regularly and adjust your treatment as needed to ensure optimal results with minimal risk.
-
Your BHRT plan begins with a comprehensive consultation and lab testing to identify specific hormone imbalances.
Once the results come in, you will have a 70 minute visit with one of our providers to design a customized plan including hormone type, dosage, and delivery method.
We then schedule regular follow-ups and lab re-testing (if needed) to fine-tune your therapy, ensuring your hormone levels remain within optimal ranges. This personalized, evidence-based approach delivers safe, lasting results — helping you feel like yourself again.
